10 Years, 10 Offices at Instructure

10 Years Ago, Josh Coates, an entrepreneurial founder, had an idea to create a learning management system that was easy to use and created from the ground up to be awesome. Instructure now has more than 3000 learning institutions using their platform. In this, their 10th year of operation (founded in 2008) the company has more than 1100 employees across the globe and their 10th office is right here in Pleasant Grove, Utah. The second campus in Utah will be home to more than 400 employees focusing on worldwide technical support and software engineering. Unlike the ribbon burning at their [...]

FY2019 H-1B Visa Petitions: Start Early, Prepare Thoroughly

In previous years, Utah employers and their foreign professional employees have enjoyed an easier review process for H-1B petitions. Recent trends, however, suggest employers should begin working with counsel earlier than usual and should prepare for enhanced scrutiny from USCIS. Per federal regulations, each fiscal year USCIS makes available only 85,000 H-1B visas. Considering that H-1B applications always exceed the number available, the greatest challenge previously facing an employer was prevailing in the lottery style selection process. This year, however, in addition to the lottery process, there is an unprecedented shift in H-1B adjudication. Specifically, USCIS is challenging and scrutinizing [...]

From Utah’s Classrooms to Utah’s Workforce: Talent Development and Retention

We all know how important a talented workforce is to the health of Utah’s businesses and overall economy. With the growth of Silicon Slopes, Utah industries are going to require more and more highly-skilled and highly educated workers in the coming years. Fortunately for us, Utah has a strong and vibrant system of higher education and technical colleges. Unfortunately, however, Utah is a net exporter of trained and educated talent. A recent analysis of census data shows that migrants coming to Utah from other states are less educated than Utahns leaving the state. Senate Bill 104, Talent [...]

Computer Science: Every Classroom, Every Age

It was last October that I sat across from Aaron Skonnard, CEO of Pluralsight and former UTC board member, as he shared his vision for Utah’s educational future. The goal: computer science offered in every classroom at every age. As our economy changes, our education must change as well. Utah needs to invest in the digital future, to ensure that all our students have exposure to the skills desired in future workforces. Computer science is more than coding, it is creativity and innovation - problem solving through experience where the solutions are as unique as each individual student. For [...]

Why I will be at Silicon Slopes 2018 Tech Summit

We’ve all gone to those conferences where, by the end of the first morning, we are questioning why we haven’t already made our way to the hotel pool to avoid one more droning conversation, one more irrelevant presentation or less than dynamic speaker. The lighting is mediocre, the chairs are uncomfortable, and you’ve been staring at the back of a stranger’s head so long you are convinced you have every hair memorized. Silicon Slopes Tech Summit is NOT that conference. Utahns are genuinely excited about the rapid growth of the state’s tech scene. Investors have not only taken notice, but [...]

What the Parity Pledge means to Homie

We hire who we know, and relationships start with conversations At Homie, we believe in grass roots, transparency, and disrupting ineffective establishments. Having battled an entrenched industry for the past two years, we’ve come to believe that large and successful change efforts start, not with those in power, but with conversations among friends. Change doesn’t happen when a leader announces a plan. Change begins deep inside a system, when a few people notice something they will no longer tolerate, or respond to a dream of what’s possible. The parity pledge is such a conversation, a way for people who have [...]
